FAQ

What is a certification card (C card)?

It proves that you have completed certain dive training. There are many kinds of C card, showing divers’ level, such as “open water diver”, and certifying received education, like “specialty diver”.

Why is C card required?

Diving is the activity carried out on diver’s own decision and responsibility. The cards prove you have trained and have experience of certain diving. It will be needed to receive appropriate services and advice at dive centers.

What can I do with the open water diver certification?

Once you are certified as an open water diver, you can dive with your partner without supervision in the same or better condition you have ever dove. You can rent or purchase scuba diving gear at the dive center. It meets the prerequisite of advance open water diver course and specialty courses for step up.

I don’t have enough time for it. Is there any option?

‘Discover scuba diving’ or ‘Scuba diver’ courses might meet your needs. While Discover scuba diving is not a certification course, you can have a taste of the underwater world quickly and easily. After learning the basic safety guideline and skills, you dive into a pool or open water less than 6m depth under the direct supervision of an instructor.

Scuba diver course is a subset of the OWD course. While what divers can do is more restricted compared with OWD, it takes shorter time to get certification. You can get OWD certification completing the rest of sections when your time is available.

I’m not good at swimming. Is it OK?

Since air is supplied from the cylinder, buoyancy control device and fins help you to move in the water, you don’t need to be a good swimmer. But you need basic skills and ability to comfortably maintain yourself in the water. We will ask you to:

  • swim 200m (or snorkel 300m) without stopping. There is no time limit.
  • Float and tread water for 10min.
Is there any age limit for diving?

There is no upper limit. There are many divers over 70 years old. For the safety reason, we ask the person 45 years old and over for physician’s medical certification. Minimum age is 10 years old.

Can I dive with poor eyesight?

Since the things look 1.25 times magnified through the mask in the water, the person who wears glasses occasionally may not feel inconvenience. To the person who needs glasses or lenses in daily life, we offer the mask with prescription lenses or wearing disposable contact lenses.

What about shark attacks?

Only few kinds of shark are dangerous to people, and it is very rare to meet them. Common sharks in diving are basically harmless and many divers love them.

Why are the prices for lessons different among shops?

One reason is that the things included in the price are different. For example, expenses accompanied with open water dive lesson, like transportation, accommodation, meals etc., are included or not make big difference. The place the lesson will be held, or the hotel to stay also change the price. So please check the details about course and prices to figure out total cost to get certification before you enroll.
